Building Your Network

Some opening questions:

When it comes to your own practice as an educator...

  • Do teachers need to be learners? Why or why not?
  • From whom do you learn?
  • When, and how often?
  • With whom do you collaborate?
  • How else do you learn?
  • How else COULD you learn?
  • What are the topics or skills related to your role as an educator you'd most like to learn more about?
  • What have you done in the last month to learn more about that?  the last week?  the last day?

What is a Personal Learning Network (PLN)?

  • The resources you go to when you want to learn something
    • Books, journals, media
    • Personal and professional "face to face" connections
    • Formal learning environments
    • Electronic network sources

Why do I need a PLN?

"Networks are amazing, powerful things. I just wish I could help more understand this better. I have these people "working for me" and "with me" everyday.

It's a bit like going into a staff room of the best teachers you could imagine. You can't wait to get in there and hear their stories because you learn and are inspired every time you get together. The difference is my staff room is always open and someone is always there....that's why I don't get enough sleep! "
